Mompreneur is THE new “It” word.

There are tons of moms taking the entrepreneur world by storm. Whether it’s to help their family out financially while staying home to take care of the kids or to pursue their own dreams, moms are doing it big.

It’s because of this that I wanted to make sure to include an awesome mompreneur in my ever evolving and educational series titled Real Women On Health, Fear, and the Art of Living Well.

This week’s superwoman is beauty aficionado who decided to be an advocate for affordable green beauty.  Lisa Wilson launched her nail polish line, Lisa Lacquer while working in the beauty industry and pregnant with her second child, she are tired of the same boring colors and decided to make her own…with a non-toxic twist.

Read on to read more about Lisa Wilson and her journey.

1.  Tell Us A Little About Yourself

My background is in beauty, working as an Editor at some of the top fashion magazines in NYC. I’m also a mom of two boys, ages 4 and 9. When I’m not testing out new beauty products for work or taking the boys to soccer and karate, you can find me catching up on the latest episodes of Scandal or The Real Housewives.

I have been a Beauty Editor for over ten years. After seeing hundreds of products cross my desk everyday, I grew bored with the same old nail polish colors. And just like any mom on a budget, I no longer wanted to spend a lot of money of polishes only to have them chip the next day. When pregnant with my second child, I still wanted to feel beautiful with a great manicure, but didn’t trust the big name brands’ claims of being toxic-free. I wanted a polish that was cruelty free, non-toxic, and still showed off vibrant colors…so I created my own!

2. What was the one moment or thing that happened in your life, which sent you down your new path and/or approach to life?

When pregnant with my first son, I of course wanted to eat healthy. So I began to pay more attention to the ingredients in food I was eating. I was so surprised at all the chemicals and pesticides that are put in our foods. I made a decision right then to only have the healthiest foods for my family and me.

3. What is your definition of “going against the grain” when it comes to health and wellness?

I spend a lot time taking care of my health and wellness. I put myself first. Whether it’s yoga, meditation, or setting aside time to read a good book. As moms, we are often made to feel guilty for taking time for ourselves. I guess you could say I go against the grain because I don’t believe in putting yourself last in order to make everyone else happy. I think that it actually benefits your family and everyone around you if you take time to nourish your mind, body, and soul.

 4. What is your experience/feedback you’ve noticed when sharing that information with others?

A lot of mother’s agree that they often feel guilty if they take time for themselves. I have a close group of girlfriends and we have playdates with our children, but also spa days where we just have a relaxing day. My experience and feedback is very positive when I suggest to women to take time for themselves.

5. How do you think fear plays a role in people’s exploration (or lack thereof) when it comes to their health?

It can be overwhelming and a bit frighting to try new things, especially if it has to do with your health. I think you should just do your research, thoroughly, and not be afraid to explore new things.

6. What advice would you give to someone that is just starting on their wellness journey?

I would say to take it slow. You don’t have to start yoga, become vegan, and begin meditating all on the same day. Try taking only ten minutes a day, at the start of your day, to sit and have some quiet time. Or begin to cut out certain unhealthy foods gradually from your diet. It’s a wellness journey, not a race. Take your time and enjoy the journey!
