But, how do you use use maca powder? How do you realistically add it into your day?

Well, fear not.

This blog post will help you learn how to use maca powder, it’s health benefits, and any easy smoothie recipe to my favorite smoothie for maca powder.

My absolute favorite way to add maca powder into my day is by making a maca smoothie. It makes for a great start to your day, and helps reduce the sometimes terrible taste that maca can have.

Yes, I said it. Maca can taste pretty awful straight out the bag.

But, making this morning smoothie or smoothie bowl is one of the easiest and most delicious ways to get your daily maca in.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Maca Root Powder?

Maca powder is a nutritional powerhouse that can be found in a ton of health food stores nowadays. And while I started out trying a bunch of different brands of maca at first, I ended up loving the maca selections from The Maca Team, but more about that later.

Maca root is a plant from the Peruvian Andes from the mustard family of vegetables. It is a cruciferous vegetable so it’s like a distant cousin of some of the list of other hormone friendly vegetables such as kale and broccoli. It is also known as a peruvian ginseng. In this scientific study on Pubmed, “Maca is a plant with great potential as an adaptogen and appears to be promising as a nutraceutical in the prevention of several diseases. Scientific evidence showed effects on sexual behavior, fertility, mood, memory, osteoporosis, metabolism, and the treatment of some tumor entities.”

It is known to be helpful for hormone balance and used as one of the popular natural remedies for those looking to balance hormones.

It is also known as an adaptogen, which means it a non-toxic herb or food that is meant to help the body adapt to stress.

Does Maca Powder Help Balance Hormones?

Maca has been traditionally used for a very long time to help with a lot of health issues including fertility, sexual desire, and even athletic performance. Per a variety of medical studies, it has shown it’s potential to help improve one’s overall health, memory, energy levels, and encourage improved hormonal balance.

This is why it’s become a staple on the shelves of stores such as whole foods and an ingredient in recipes for your favorite homemade workout drink for an extra energy boost.

I used Maca when my period went missing for months, as I shared in the video below. This is the type of maca powder that I used in my daily routine. Of course, none of this is medical advice and it’s best to speak with your medical professional or herbalist.

Also, be sure to be cautious of starting maca if you do have thyroid problems. It’s best to do your own research before starting any hormonal supplement in the case, especially if you are on medication.

Raw Maca Vs. Gelatinized Maca: What’s The Difference?

There are several types of maca that come up in your average Google search.

One of the most common questions people have is “What’s the difference between raw maca and gelatinized maca?”

When Maca is harvested, it is available for consumption through a variety of processing options.

Raw maca is made by harvesting the roots, cleaning them, and then being ground into a fine powder. During this process, the roots are not heated over 105 degrees. This retains the most nutrients in the end product.

Gelatinized maca is made by drying the roots, boiling them, and ending with a pressurized process to help reduce the starch content in the end product. While there are less nutrients in the end product due to the processing, it is made more digestible since the excess starch is removed.

At the end of the day, it is up to personal preference and how your body deals with each product. Thankfully, some brands have created sampler kits so you can see what works best for your body.

What About The Taste of Maca?

Ahhh, the taste of Maca.

I’ve already mentioned that I’m not a fan of it’s taste. It has a very distinct flavor that is almost malt-like in my opinion. Because of this, I like to mix it into chocolate based recipes. I also like to add it coffee based drinks since it’s such a nice compliment in depth and taste.

Hopefully this super simple but tasty smoothie recipe can help make it easier to add this powerful antioxidant rich adaptogen into your everyday life.

Creamy Chocolate Banana Maca Smoothie

Delicious super creamy chocolate banana maca smoothie that's dairy free, vegan, and uses avocados.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Servings 1 LARGE SMOOTHIE

Equipment

  • High Speed Blender

Ingredients

  • 1 Ripe Avocado
  • 1 Ripe Banana
  • 1 tbsp Tablespoon Cacao Powder
  • 2-3 tsp Maca Powder
  • 1 Cup Milk (I Use Almond Milk)
  • 1/2 Cup Ice

Instructions

  •  Rough chop the banana and avocado into pieces.
  • Toss the banana, avocado, cacoa, ice, and milk into the blender and blend for up to 45 seconds or until smooth. Add more milk if the mixture is too thick for you.
  • Pour into one large mason jar, or two cups to share.
  • Add chocolate chips if desired.

Notes

A sweetener of choice can be added to this recipe. I have used stevia or honey and it tasted great.

This recipe is so simple that I almost feel guilty setting up steps for it. You can add chocolate chips if you want and go to town. This makes one serving of about 12-16 ozs.

The best way to use maca root powder is whatever drink or recipe that makes it easier to take regularly. This smoothie should help with that.
