My Favorite Affordable Natural Whole Body Moisturizer

Walking into the body lotion aisle is overwhelming. Hell, walking into any part of the beauty section of your favorite store is pretty overwhelming if you ask me.

Add to the task of trying to figure out which is the best & healthiest body lotion on the shelf, it’s easy to understand why someone would want to simply pick anything and walk to the checkout counter.

It’s very easy to forget that our skin is our largest organ. I often like to think of my skin like a huge sponge soaking in EVERYTHING that it comes in contact with.

With that visual, can you just imagine all the chemicals we’re bringing into our inner organs on a daily basis?

We are incredibly mindful and well intentioned when choosing products for ourselves when we are pregnant and also for little babies, but why not keep the same concern if we aren’t?

Many people assume that purchasing any old organic body lotion on the shelf is a safe and sure bet. This is true some of the time, but not all.

I’m sure you are left wondering “So, what is the best non-toxic moisturizer?”

That’s the question I had years ago when I started down my entire cleaner living journey. But, before we get into what I finally decided on, let me tell you why opting for a body lotion or moisturizer without harmful chemicals is so important in the first place.

Hormones, Cancer, & Developmental Delays, oh my…

Yep! It’s that serious.

While some of the products on the market have very minimal amounts of chemicals linked to potential hormonal issues, cancer, and developmental delays, there’s a good amount that do.

As mentioned in this article from the Environmental Working Group, “Some chemicals used in personal care products pose risks at very low doses[22] and can interfere with the hormone system.[23] Research shows that “endocrine-disrupting” chemicals such as parabens and phthalates may pose the greatest risk during prenatal and early postnatal development, when organ and neural systems are forming.[24] Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to endocrine diseases and some types of cancer.[25] For example, endocrine disruptors are known to affect how women’s bodies use estrogen and thus have been linked to breast cancer.[26]

“Fragrances” Can Be A Dangerous Mystery Mix of Chemicals…

Everyone loves to smell great and many people pick a lotion simply based on how it smells. Even “natural” body lotions have nonspecific “fragrance” on the ingredient labels.

However, ingredients such as generalized “fragrance” is an umbrella term. In fact, according to MadeSafe.org ” terms ‘fragrance,’ ‘perfume,’ or ‘eau de toilette’…are umbrella terms for up to 100 different chemical ingredients that make up that scent.”

As mentioned in this article from The Guardian, “Fragrance formulations are considered a “trade secret” and therefore protected from disclosure – even to regulators or manufacturers. Instead, one word, fragrance, appears on ingredients lists for countless cosmetics, personal care and cleaning products.

Because of this, I try my best to use either fragrance free products, (which can even sometimes have hidden fragrances in them), simplified single ingredient products, or ones that identify every single ingredient plainly on the label.

So, What Body Moisturizer Do I Currently Use

While I am always on the look out for great options for the top spot of best organic & natural body lotion, so this may or may not change in time.

However, my favorite natural body moisturizer has been Now Solutions Shea Nut Oil. I originally shared about it in my YouTube video “Best Oils To Try OTHER Than Coconut Oils

Call me boring, but I reach for this oil so much simply because it can be used as a hair moisturizer, (especially for my dry hair), in addition to a clean non-toxic body moisturizer.

Yes, it’s not technically a lotion, but moisturizes better than a lot of lotions I’ve come across.

PLUS, it is cost effective as a multipurpose WHOLE BODY moisturizer at less than $10. I usually purchase 3 bottles for the entire year and use it for my kids and myself.

If you’re wondering what is shea nut oil? According to this article, “Shea nut oil is the white colored fat compressed from the nuts of Shea tree named as Vitellaria paradox.”

This oil is very thick, so a little really goes a long way. If you have thinner hair, I actually wouldn’t recommend it as part of your styling routine simply because it may make it too sticky and heavy. However, if you have very dry scalp, I have found it to be very soothing and helpful.

So, there we are. My favorite moisturizer is actually not a lotion at all.

Let me know if you’ve tried Shea Nut Oil in the comments.

I've seen this brand and have always wondered if it was any good. It's really scary how many harmful ingredients are in some of the name-brand beauty and skincare products out there. This is great info!
