Best Healthy Grocery Home Delivery Options

Who wants to leave the house with all the craziness with everything going on right now? When I went to the store yesterday, the shelves were literally almost empty, and the lines were CRAZY!

I was only able to pick up what was left over and (unfortunately) picked over. Once I got home. I started to pull together a list of my favorite places to shop online because those were going to be my go to from now until who knows when. Whether it be direct to home delivery, or just picking up from the store, this was going to be the new norm.

I try to eat as healthfully as possible. And while I eat a whole food plant based diet around 90%-ish of the time, I do not claim any particular dietary label.

That said, here is my list of best nationwide home delivery and pick up sites and services that sell healthy foods and products. I will also include discounts that are either exclusive from me or I found for you.

Misfits Market

Misfits Market is a company that delivers organic produce straight to your house at an incredible discount. They are able to do this because they commit to “rescuing” the “ugly” produce that is perfect fine and healthy to eat, but does not pass the high cosmetic based standards of the grocery stores. I did an unboxing of my first box in the video below.

The boxes go for $22/week (retail price of $35) for a box of 10-13lbs of produce for up to 2 people and for $35/week (retail price of $65) for a 18-22lbs box for up to 5 people.

I’ve been getting it for the last couple of months, and have been loving it. Sign up using code COOKWME-LU7SUS to get 25% off your first box.

Amazon/Whole Foods

Once Amazon purchased Whole Foods, the entire healthy grocery shopping game changed for the better. In addition to prices getting lower, there are new ways to get your foods to you which don’t require you spending much time in the actual store.

Whole Foods offers 2 hour home delivery and in-store pickup as long as you are an Amazon Prime Member (click here to sign up for a free 30 day trial). Amazon makes healthier shopping more accessible by providing discounted membership for students and those who receive government assistance. This membership will also include the free 2-day shipping and Amazon Video, so it’s a steal in my opinion.

To grocery shop at Whole Foods through Amazon, you have to shop through this link, and add products to your shopping cart. As long as the total is over $35 and you are an Amazon Prime Member (and you live in an area in which your local Whole Foods will deliver to), you will receive your items.

If you want to pick them up in store, simply select that option at checkout.

Amazon Fresh

Amazon also offers their own Amazon Fresh Program which delivers fresh, frozen, and shelf stable grocery delivery. This program as a wider shipping area, so it’s great for anyone who doesn’t live near a store.

They offer a lot of great options and deals that are exclusive to Amazon Fresh patrons.

The catch is there’s a monthly fee of $12.99/month on top of your regular Amazon Prime annual membership fee. However, in some cases it’s still pretty good based on the extensive selection of goods and that there’s no additional fee for shipping.

Butcher Box

One of the most asked questions I receive once I tell people I eat 90%-ish whole food plant based but am not vegan is “So what makes up the other 10%”? along with (of course) “Do you eat meat?”.

I try not to eat cheese as I have always been lactose intolerant, but occasionally indulge in a good slice of New York Pizza. If I am going to eat meat on occasion, I opt for the cleanest option I can find.

My research led me to the company ButcherBox because of their awesome standards.

ButcherBox delivers 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef, free-range, organic chicken, heritage breed pork, and wild caught Alaskan salmon directly to your door.

What’s grass-fed/grass-finished?

My research showed me that even though companies are boasting about the grass-fed diets they are feeding cows compared to the GMO-corn (and other crazy ingredients including byproducts from other animals) diet factory farmed cows are fed, that does not mean those cows are ONLY fed grass through their entire lives. They could actually have been fed grains or anything else with a small amount of grass mixed in. Butcher box is one of the few companies out there offering grass-fed/grass-finished beef along with organic and wild caught options.

The boxes start at $149 for 9-14 lbs which is good for small families. I order this box for my family of 4 and adjust the delivery times so we only receive it every 3 months. With this set up, we are able to eat a mostly plant based diet the majority of the time, plus save on the cost of this admittedly more expensive meat choice by one eating it on spread out occasions.

Walmart

Believe it or not, Walmart has an amazing selection of healthy grocery foods that can be delivered right to your home or ordered for in store pick up.

I recently went to get some of my affordable favorites and took note of the many things I can order from home if I needed to.

Shopping for home delivery or pick up is super simple. Just add all your choices to your shopping bag, and during checkout, select either delivery or pickup. After checkout, you will be told when to pick up your items or when to expect them at home.

One way I save even more money while shopping for either pick up or delivery at walmart is by using a cashback website. Websites such as iBotta or TopCashback.com give you a certain amount of cashback on your purchase if you use their links to access the walmart (or any of there thousands of other) websites.

It may seem like a little bit of cashback if 2% is offered, but that’s money back for doing what you would’ve done regardless AND it adds up if you use the cashback site on every available website they have when shopping online. I was certainly happy to receive the extra couple hundred dollars I received from using the sites during the year last holiday season just for buying things I needed anyway.

Check out the video tutorial I did on iBotta below:

These are a couple of ways I will be shopping over the next couple of weeks to avoid having to be out in the stores too much. Hopefully these suggestions will help with the social distancing situation.
