DIM: The Powerful & Little Known Hormone Balancer That Saved Me

Periods, and not having mine is something I’ve become a little too comfortable talking about on the internet.

Well, let me back that up. My period used to be MIA, but not anymore.

Through my own research and trial and error, I was able to naturally fix my hormones and get Aunt Flo back WITHOUT the help of the conventional medical community.

I first spoke about it in my posts 5 Natural & Inexpensive Things I Did To Get My Period Back and How & Why I Greened Up My Period Using Organic & Sustainable Feminine Products, plus multiple times on my instagram account @itsmeladyg.

But what the heck is DIM and what does it have to do with hormones?

Well as I mentioned in my video below, I used the supplement DIM or Diindolylmethane to help get my hormones balanced when I stopped getting my period a couple of years ago.

PLEASE NOTE: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. Anything mentioned here is from my personal experience and research. Please be sure to continue your own research and ask your doctor or herbalist before jumping into anything. Should you join me, you are doing so on your own accord.

What is DIM?

According to WebMd, DIM or “Diindolylmethane is formed in the body from plant substances contained in “cruciferous” vegetables such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli. Scientists think these vegetables may help to protect the body against cancer because they contain diindolylmethane and a related chemical called indole-3-carbinol.”

According to my research, Indole-3-carbinol or I3C is the original chemical that gets broken down from cruciferous vegetables such as kale, broccoli, and cauliflower. Once the chemical gets to the gut, it is broken down into other enzymes which include DIM. Each enzyme has been shown to have protective abilities, but DIM has been made into it’s own supplement to make it more available and ensure its effectivity in the body. Be sure to do your own research for more support on this.

What’s so great about DIM, anyway?

According to this article from Dr. Oz, There is increasing research evidence of its effects on estrogen metabolism, which is important since some dangerous cancers, including breast cancer, can be fueled by excess hormone exposure.

In addition, this scientific study states that DIM and it’s precursor chemical indole-3-carbinol indeed induced cell death of cervical cancer cells. It goes on to say that “In vitro, both I3C and DIM caused accumulation of DNA strand breaks in three cervical cancer cell lines.” The study concludes by stating

“These data confirm the proapoptotic action (natural scheduled cell death)  of I3C on transformed cells in vitro, extend the observations to cervical cancer cells and to DIM and show for the first time that dietary I3C results in increased apoptosis in target tissues in vivo.”

So, uhhh yeah, DIM is kinda a big deal.

And just to play devil’s advocate, a handful of sites mention that DIM and/or I3C may encourage the development of estrogen in the body, but as mentioned in this scientific study Concerns have been raised that I3C might increase the formation of estrogen metabolites that induce or promote cancer, but this has not been demonstrated.

How I used DIM to help my hormones get balanced

Whether you know it or not, our bodies are being bombarded with estrogen-like compounds and chemicals all the time.

However, there were two minor cons that I suggest someone take heed of before starting.

1. Headache

When you first start taking DIM, you may experience some minor headaches. I used to have migraines on a regular basis and will tell you that it was nowhere near that bad at all. However, for someone that does not have experience with headaches, you may want to consider this.

2. Urine Discoloration

The first time I started taking this, I quickly noticed that my urine was a slight orange color. Although I could not find a study explaining this, I did find many testimonies on forums of other experiencing the same thing. A couple mentioned that they went to their doctor to check out why this was happening and was told not to worry about it.

I have personally went to the doctor for full blood panels since taking this and have never received anything alarming in relation to it.

I would say that the discoloration is much like when you buy certain vitamins and notice that your pee turned neon yellow after taking them the first couple of times.

However, as I always mention, I am not a doctor. I am only sharing my personal experience and research. Be sure to check with your doctor if you have concerns.

I shared these tips in my latest video which you can check out below:
