The 5 Essentials Every Mom Needs In Their Travel Bag

Packing for a family trip should end with certificates and medals being given to those that complete the task with the least amount of stress as possible.

Though I’m still trying to master the stress-free packing thing, I have narrowed down my must have list so well that I’m able to pack my carry on bag in the dark. These essentials are ones I have reached for so often I just left them in the bag during the summer.

Here are the essentials I believe every mom needs in her travel bag:

1. A Good Portable Cell Phone Charger

For the longest time, I kept a portable charger in my Amazon shopping cart with the intentions of purchasing it. It wasn’t until I was stuck traveling around the city looking around for a free outlet to plug in my charger that I decided that was it!

I went home and ordered me and my family a couple of chargers to tuck in our bags. While I did order a super big and heavy charger that could literally jump start a car, I found it not as practical to carry around all day through amusement parks and long distances.

That is why I ordered a highly rated but lightweight charger such as this one, to stash in my pocket or, (dare I say it), fanny pack. Having a charger like this eliminates the worry of not being able to contact your family members or find your way around while exploring because of a dead phone.

2. A Waterproof (Yes, I’m Saying It) Fanny Pack

Yes, I admit that I wear a fanny pack. BUT, it’s only when I know that I will be visiting a place that I might encounter inclement weather or become particularly sweaty from the heat. Having a waterproof waist pack such as this one keeps your most prized possessions safe and most importantly DRY!

I usually throw my cell phone, credit cards, the aforementioned portable charger and a charger wire, my ID, paper cash, and any other important papers that I may need.

Wearing this pack close to the body ensures that my items are safe and where I need them. Just a warning though, because it is made of plastic, I usually let it hang over the waist band of my pants and cover it with a larger shirt. I don’t like it laying right next to my skin because it makes me sweat. So just think of this before throwing it on.

3. A Large But Lightweight Scarf

This should’ve actually been number one because it is a great workhorse. Large scarves that also function as shawls are amazing assets to any mom travel bag.

One pretty but durable scarf can work as a blanket, a baby swaddle, a headscarf, a changing pad, a picnic blanket, a barrier to hold up while kids change out of swim suits in a less than ideal public area, a shopping bag (yes…seriously), etc, etc, etc. So, a scarf like this one is something that I ALWAYS keep in my travel bag.

Try to choose one that you like, is washable, BUT something that you won’t get too upset about it getting messed up with juice or something way worse.

4. A Foldable Lightweight Jacket

I know, you’re probably thinking a jacket AND a scarf?! Yes!

What if your little one keeps saying they’re cold while taking a stroll on the boardwalk at night. You hand over the scarf and wrap them in it for warmth. But, after a couple of minutes you realize that it is getting pretty cool and you wish you could bundle up with them.

This has definitely happened to me.

So, I looked into lightweight foldable jackets like this one. It provides a layer of warmth, a hood, and pockets in case your hands need covering too. It can fold into a small pouch, making it easy to throw in a purse or baby bag,

5. A Foldable Backpack/Bag

The last item I always keep around is a foldable bag. I recently fell in love with foldable backpacks since they leave my hands free.

Having a foldable bag is perfect for organizing and easily carrying any unexpected items I may pick up in my travels. I can easily throw a bottle of water in it along with any souvenirs. A bag like this one is ideal, and comes in a variety of colors for the entire family.

So, as soon as you figure out your next family vacation destination, be sure to add these items to your suitcase checklist.
