Green Beauty Splurge: Smith & Cult Nail Polish Review

Green beauty is steadily becoming the new “it” thing. More people are becoming aware of the questionable ingredients that have been used in the products we use on an everyday basis including skincare and makeup.

When you start researching some of the ingredients used, it’s easy to get absolutely flabbergasted and angry once you know it’s not completely necessary to make products using these chemicals.

For instance, we have become so accustomed to the heavy chemical smell of most nail polishes. Well, you may be surprised to know that the smell is the combination of a couple potentially toxic ingredients including formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is one of the ingredients used in embalming fluids. According to the United States Department of Environmental Protection Agency’s website, formaldehyde can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. High levels of exposure may cause some types of cancers.

However, this is just one of the potential toxic chemicals in our everyday beauty products that we hardly even think about while pampering ourselves. There are actually at least 3-10, (and/or more), which have been found in most formulations.

Thankfully, there are brands that are getting the message of people wanting cleaner options when it comes to beauty products.

These brands are creating lacquers without these highly questionable ingredients. These products are labeled according to the amount of toxic elements they are missing such as 3-Free, 5-Free, 7-Free, 8-Free, and even 10-Free. Unfortunately, (generally), these cost more than everyday brands. However, I would certainly agree that my health is worth it.

Smith & Cult Non-Toxic Nail Polish

My recent green beauty splurge brought on a new favorite luxury obsession. Yes, due to it’s price tag of $18 a bottle, this nail polish is considered a “luxury” brand. However, it is free of 8 of the major potential toxins found in many of the other on the shelf brands.

Smith & Cult is a nail polish line made by Dineh Mohair, the founder of the beauty brand Hard Candy. This brand is known for it’s on trend and edgy colors along with being long lasting and high shine.

I purchased my bottles (the base coat, the top coat, and the color Doe My Dear) from Amazon. With my Amazon Prime subscription, the arrived quickly and in one piece.

I tried a couple of swipes of the color on my own before heading to the nail salon for my far-from-monthly mani-pedi. I loved how smooth it went on. In addition, I noticed that it lacked the heavy chemical scent that most polishes have. The nail technician asked lots of questions about the brand and complimented me on the choice.

When asked why I chose the color Doe My Dear, it is actually quite simple. I’ve been having a hard time finding a grey-beige nude toned color and this one seemed perfect. It matched perfectly.

Would I recommend the brand and color, absolutely. BUT, they are pricey. There are other brands such as Zoya and Mineral Fusion which are more affordable.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you’ve ever tried this brand or suggest other non-toxic brands below.
